1861年的春天,有着“天下第一江山”美誉的北固山上,来了一群不速之客。他们金发碧眼,操着洋话,直奔山巅的甘露寺。甘露寺是三国时期刘备招亲处,不仅留下千古佳话,而且是北固山上欣赏美景的绝佳之处。过了两天,镇江人才听说甘露寺已改名叫“领事崖”,成为首任英国领事的办公地点,中国人不得靠近。作为千年码头的镇江,就这样第一次向外国人打开了大门。它的开埠时间,比汉口、九江和南京都早,成为长江下游第一个通商口岸。
