Japan’s Toho Titanium Company established a sponge titanium plant with a capacity of 20 tons per month in 1953. In four years, the monthly output has been increased to 150 tons. Since 1957, the demand for titanium has been reduced and the price has been gradually reduced. Therefore, efforts must be made to reduce production costs. The company has adopted the following improvements. 1) improved chlorination furnace operation and recovery of TiO 2 from spent mines; 2) simplified refining of TiCl 4; 3) reduced magnesium losses during reduction or other processes; and 4) improved electrolysis equipment to reduce magnesium production costs. As a result of the above and several other technological improvements, the cost of producing titanium sponge has been reduced by about 20% over the last four years.
