The idea of using seawater to generate electricity is not new, and Japan has done a lot of research on it since the 1980s. Not only that, the use of seawater also means that there is no need to construct a lower storehouse due to the long coastline of Japan and the abundance of sites available in the many hills. The coastal site is close to the metropolitan area and the heavily loaded electricity area. This concept is therefore attractive. Japan began construction of its first seawater pumped storage reservoir in southern Okinawa in 1991
