明代王廷相担任都察院长官时,一次从郊外乘轿回府,突遇下雨,他见轿夫穿一双新鞋,开始时小心翼翼地选干净地面落脚,后来,一不小心踩在泥水坑里,将鞋子搞脏了。轿夫见鞋子沾上污泥,便不在意了。于是不管泥里水里都踩下去。王廷相回府后,想起此事,细细琢磨觉得很有意思。有一天,他接见下属几位官员,谈话中随意扯到了轿夫惜鞋这件事。他意味深长地说:轿夫开始是爱惜这双新鞋的,后来见脏了,才“不复顾惜”。从这里我们可以悟出一个道理,“守身如玉要慎初”。众官听了都点头道:“对,难得慎初!”
