Three days after surgery, the rats in group A and group B were given normal saline, group C was treated with rofecoxib, group D was given and each group was treated with 6 ml·kg-1 of glucagon per day. The animals were dislodged twice a day for 30 minutes from the first postoperative week. Four weeks later, the right tibial plateau cartilage and synovial membrane were taken for light microscopy. The levels of interleukin 1β (IL β), matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP 1) and matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP 3) in the articular cartilage and synovium were detected by immunohistochemistry. Observed by light microscope, the degeneration of group B was more obvious than that of the other three groups; the degeneration between group C and group D was not obvious; however, the degeneration of group 2 was more than that of group A. It shows that Jikangling can inhibit the production of IL 1β, MMP 1 and MMP 3, and it has the function of anti-inflammatory, protecting and repairing articular cartilage, thus having a certain therapeutic effect on OA.
