作为西方新马克思主义者中持续坚守左翼马克思主义基本立场的领军人物,安德森介入后现代文化的讨论有着重要意义。通过与现代主义的对比,安德森发现后现代主义在资本主义世界的文化权力来源于资本主义统治秩序的变化、科技发明之社会效应的转变以及时代政治形势的变迁等全球化因素,而在对后现代主义内含的“前现代主义”和“超现代主义”的这种二分体张力格局的物质性分析中,安德森同样看到了资本主义制度的强大。另一方面,他也从后现代主义中挖掘到“空前的自鸣得意”的激进元素,认为这种元素将成为超越资本主义的重要批判力量。
