Introduction In the United Kingdom, the National Electrical Code (NEC) is the current document on the classification of hazardous locations and the selection of special equipment. Although there are many explosion-proof technologies in the United States, the most commonly used are gas explosion-proof and dust explosion-proof technologies. This article seeks to familiarize readers with some of the terms and concepts that can help them identify or install facilities used in hazardous locations according to U.S. standards. National Electrical Code In the United States, most electrical equipment is installed in accordance with NEC. The NEC document was prepared by the NEC Commission of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). NEC is a dynamic document reviewed every three years to adapt to new situations and adopt new technologies.
