In a new study, Spanish researchers identified metastasis-initiating cells through a specific marker called protein CD36. The protein found in the tumor cell membrane is responsible for uptake of fatty acids. The dependence of CD36 activity and lipid metabolism distinguishes metastasis initiating cells from other tumor cells.
