The sensitivity of different cell types to TNF-α-induced apoptosis can vary widely, but most cells become very sensitive to TNF-α when administered simultaneously with protein synthesis inhibitors. Some scholars believe that there is a gene or a group of genes that are activated after TNF receptors are induced to transmit apoptosis signals. Recent studies have shown that a TNF-activated NF-κB transcription factor plays a part in this process. This finding originally broadened the function of NF-κB as a regulator of both immune and inflammatory responses and may be involved in the regulation of apoptosis.
