Japan’s “World Journal” quoted Japan International Business Exchange Association as a statistical data show that Japanese young people’s awareness of English is changing. In fiscal 2011, the number of Japanese national candidates who participated in the TOEIC TOEIC (Top English Test) was 2.27 million, an increase of 30% over the previous year. In order to meet the challenges of globalization, the number of enterprises adopting the TOEIC results as posts and promotions has been on the rise. As a measure to improve the employment ratio of graduates, the University has also started to focus on the TOEIC. On the other hand, Japan’s overseas study abroad population growth slowed down. According to the statistics of the American Educational Testing Service (ETS), the number of Japanese students who took TOEFL in 2011 was up by 80,000, or 11%, from the same period of last year. In contrast, TOEIC candidates significantly increased.
