1956年11月22日,大理白族自治州沐浴着党的民族政策光辉而诞生。建州四十年来,自治州发生了巨变,政治、经济、文化和社会发展取得了历史性成就。这四十年,是自治州充分行使民族区域自治权,依法治州的四十年,是各民族建立新型民族关系,实现政治上平等、紧密团结的四十年,是自力更生、艰苦奋斗、开拓进取的四十年,是扩大对外开放求发展的四十年,是大力推进社会主义物质文明建设和精神文明建设,社会生产力获得大解放、大发展,走向兴旺发达的四十年。现在的自治州朝气蓬勃,已发展为社会进步、民族团结、经济繁荣的新兴自治州。
