曲艺艺术说到底是表演艺术。曲艺创作无论多么重要,最终要靠演员表演体现作品。与戏曲创作相似,大多数曲艺作品都要根据具体表演者的表现能力和表演风格而量身打造。在中国曲艺学学科建设中,最为薄弱的环节是曲艺表演学。曲艺前辈们对曲艺艺术的研究成果,基本停留在对曲艺文本和一般的艺术形态层面上,许多定义几乎与表演学无关。比如:“曲艺是语言艺术”、“以民间口头文学形式叙述故事”、“叙事兼代言的表现方法”等等,不必说曲艺表演理论体系,即便是比较规范的曲艺表演论述也比较鲜
