尽管异步转移模式(ATM)曾径众口一词被作为能把局域网和广域网合并成一个尤缝隙同构型网的唯一协议,现在许多分析家已径把ATM 到桌面的概念一笔勾销。关于ATM 为什么不适于桌面使用已提出了许多理论,从成本和复杂性到缺乏工作站或 PC 应用。这些应用要求ATM 提供服务质量(QoS)保证。目前受欢迎的 IAN 技术一以太网虽无 QoS 保证,但越来越快,使得 LAN中对 ATM 的希望似乎比以往更加遥远。
Although the term ATM has been used as the only protocol that allows LANs and WANs to be merged into a single-slot homogeneous network, many analysts now have the concept of canceling ATM to the desktop. There are many theories on why ATM is not suitable for desktop use, from cost and complexity to the lack of workstations or PC applications. These applications require that ATMs provide quality of service (QoS) guarantees. The currently popular IAN technology, Ethernet, is not guaranteed by QoS, but faster and faster, the hope for ATM in the LAN seems to be more distant than ever before.
