Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a serum glycoprotein synthesized by the liver and yolk sac in the early stages of fetal development. Its molecular weight is 70,000. During the electrophoresis, it is located between albumin and α1 globulin, and the fetus gradually disappears shortly after birth. In 1963, Abelev first discovered the presence of AFP in mice with hepatocellular carcinoma, and in 1964, Tatarinor reported an increase in serum AFP in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. Primary liver cancer is one of the most common malignancies in China. It has a short course of disease and rapid progression and is known as the “king of cancer.” AFP is a sensitive and specific biochemical indicator for clinical diagnosis of liver cancer. Although its relationship with liver cancer is not completely clear, it has progressed rapidly in recent years. This article reviews it.
