TiC coating was performed on the drill by chemical vapor deposition. The volume change due to the transformation of the inner core cubic cobalt lattice into a dense hexagonal lattice will stress the coating. This stress results in cracks in the coating that are perpendicular to the matrix-coating interface. Vertical cracks stress the pores in the interface
