Japan’s rise as a big economic, financial and science and technology country is a major event in the contemporary world economy. In terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), Japan’s GNP was equivalent to two multi-federal countries in 1988; among the 25 largest commercial banks in the world, Japan accounted for 16; and in computers, biotechnology, new materials and optoelectronics technologies In the field of high technology, Japan is clearly ahead of Western Europe, while some have surpassed the United States, while others are at every step of the way. Against this backdrop, Japan is increasingly committed to playing the role of a world power. Asia is one of Japan’s major areas of active activity and it is intended to play a more important role here than before. In the 1980s, the United States faced serious double-deficit foreign trade and fiscal deficits and the appreciation of the yen since 1986, and was again used by Japan as a new opportunity for its outward expansion to push Japan’s influence in Asia to a new stage.
