The quality of the billet has a significant influence on the surface condition of the rolled product rolled out of the billet. However, in many cases, this inspection is still based on people’s vision. So its degree of automation is not enough. We applied “industrial television systems” to such inspection operations to identify defective images with fluorescent magnetic particle inspection. Four high-sensitivity television picture tubes and some circuits capture images of fluorescent defects on the four sides of the billet to determine whether they are harmful or harmless and drive the printer system. These inspection data are processed by a microcomputer, and the checked billet is automatically fractionated according to the inspection result. The effect of inspecting defects with an industrial television system is about 14% higher than with normal visual inspection.
