甲酚在工业上应用较广,如用于人造树脂和炸药等工业,它常作为农产工业上的防腐消毒剂,在染料工业方面,它是一种溶剂,至于医疗上作为消毒药水已很普遍;此外,亦用于纺织、墨水、塑料和电木等制造工业。惟其对人体皮肤有剧烈的刺激和腐蚀作用,如在工作中不慎或不按操作规程工作,接触了甲酚可以引起灼伤。笔者见到某电木厂工人悞被甲酚倾溅面部及肢体而引起灼伤一例,今报导如下。
