《中庸》原为《礼记》中的一篇,司马迁认为是孔子之孙子思所作。程颐《中庸解》说:“此篇乃孔门传授心法,子思恐其久而差也,故笔之于书,以授孟子。”朱熹《中庸章句序》指出:“《中庸》何为而作也?子思子忧道学之失其传而作也。”程、朱还将《大学》、《中庸》从《礼记》中单独抽出,与《论语》、《孟子》合编为《四书》,以为“《六经》之阶梯。”这不仅提高了《大学》、《中庸》的学术地位,而且对宋明理学的建立产生了很大的影响。
