Surface properties are very important in many materials applications. The arrangement of surface atoms is usually different from that of the body, which can affect the way the surface adsorbs atoms of other substances. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have recently directly observed the rearrangement of atoms on the surface of platinum.
