Comparative genomic hybridization is a molecular cytogenetic method that can understand the genetic variation of tumors from the chromosomal and sub-chromosomal levels, and can classify mutations as DNA gains or losses. This classification is of biological significance because the gain of DNA suggests the activation of a tumor gene, and its loss suggests the inactivation of a tumor suppressor gene. These two genes are the basis for the development and progression of malignancy.
