After the war, the economic relations between Japan and the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe (hereinafter referred to as the Soviet Union and the East) have remained at unusually low levels under the constraints and “bundling” of the political pattern of East-West confrontation. Taking the Japan-Sudan trade as an example, the two GNPs account for the second and third place respectively in the world’s trade, accounting for only 1.3% of Japan’s total foreign trade (1987 figures). By comparison, the trade volume between the United States, South Korea, West Germany, Taiwan and Japan accounts for 30.4%, 5.6%, 5.0% and 4.9% of Japan’s total foreign trade respectively.
