关汉卿是我国戏剧史上最伟大的作家之一.1258年前后,正是他从事戏剧活动的时代.关汉卿的时代,是我国历史上民族矛盾和阶级矛盾最复杂、尖锐的一个时代.在十二世纪,中国已经形成南北对峙的局面.淮河以南,仍由汉人统治着,史称南宋;淮河以北,则由女真人统治,国号金.十三世纪开始,蒙古人在北方崛起,1214年,攻破了金朝的首部北京,迫使金朝迁部到汴梁(现在的开封);1234年蒙古人将金朝灭亡.1260年,蒙古族雄才大略的领袖忽必烈称帝,这就是元朝.元朝于1279年灭亡南宋,统一中国.元朝统一中国的过程中,正是关汉卿生活的时代.在这个时代中,连年不断的战争,严重地摧残了中国原来已经高度发展的封建经济.女真族、蒙古族等民族的统治阶级,对住居在中国的各族人民,施行残酷的压迫、剥削和掠夺.被统治的中国人民,喘息在战祸之下,不仅衣不暖、食不饱,在生活上毫无保障,而且也丧失最起码的人身自由,他们有随时被杀戮或被俘为奴隶的危险.如中国俗语所说,这是个“无法无天”的时代.这个黑暗世界的情况,在关汉卿的
