古代的山西是一个富有文化特色的地区。这里是中国人类的祖先最早开发的地区之一,有着悠久的历史文化传统。山西山川形势险固,素有“表里山河”之称,历代王朝都曾在山西附近建立过都城,从而使山西目前还保留下许多旧城古墙,由此也形成了山西地区文化的一特点。修筑这些城墙在当时是十分浩大的工程,它凝聚了无数劳动人民的智慧、心血、汗水和生命,正因为如此,研究这些现存下来的老墙,保护这些老墙,对我们了解、认识祖国悠久的历史文化,都是很有价值的。
