As part of West Germany’s plan to improve operational efficiency, the West German Defense Department chose the Hughes Aircraft APG-56 Radar to add a look-and-drop interception capability to the F-4F “Phantom” fighter. The main contractor for the project is the Mercedes-Benz MBL company, which is in charge of installing a new system on the F-4F aircraft, including the installation of the APG-65 radar and the Hughes Advanced Company Air-to-air missiles (AMRAAM). The plan will cost 300 million U.S. dollars to retrofit 75 “Phantom” aircraft with initial operational capabilities around 1990. In addition to installing the APG-65 radar, MBB’s updated equipment includes a new inertial navigation system that may employ a ring laser gyro, a new digital air data center computer, and a new type of weapon for projection and other missions Task computer. These digital devices and radars ultimately improve reliability and serviceability.
