At the Magma copper mine, due to the complex surrounding rock conditions, it was forced to adopt a down-fill method using a mixture of graded tailings from cement and concentrator and ground slag. Mining is carried out on segmented roadways spaced vertically at 22 feet. Drive along a 10-foot-wide approach and lay down cushions that include longitudinal beams, cross-columns and metal meshes after completing several passes. Tailings and slag to cement ratios are 16: 1 in the first 3-foot-filling and the rest 28: 1 or 35: 1. When mining and filling operations are completed on a staged roadway, mining moves to the next level of sectioning. Beams and other support structures are encased in the fill body, thus providing safer and faster mining conditions than under the original rock. This method yields nearly 100% recovery and limited depletion. So far, one of the most successful methods has been the Magma Ore.
