有理想的文化志士,一直在探求戏曲改革之路。早在辛亥革命前后,就发生过戏曲改良运动。然而,真正把戏曲改革和发展提升到新文化建设的高度并作为文化事业开展工作,则是从中国共产党领导的延安及其抗日根据地开始的。当年,一大批接受马克思列宁主义、追求革命理想的进步知识分子中的戏剧专业人才齐聚延安,或采取“旧瓶装新酒”、“改旧编新”的方式发扬光大传统戏曲艺术,或以现实主义创作方法与时俱进地编演现代戏,着力反映革命斗争的现实生活,描写对象以工农兵群众为主,同时在戏曲编导、音乐、表演、舞美及演出活动方式等方面改进和创新,从此开创了旧剧革命的新生面。
