From 1991 to 1993, 181 particle samples and 2 particle grading samples in the atmosphere over the western part of the Taiwan Strait were collected. The particulate metals Al, Fe, Cu, Pb, Cd and Na were analyzed by atomic spectrophotometry. The content of particulate metal Fe, Cu, Pb and Cd in the atmosphere of the western Taiwan Strait was significantly lower than that in the mainland cities. Al, Cu and Pb in atmospheric particulate matter show significant annual variations. Al, Fe, Cu, Pb and Cd showed obvious seasonal changes. The main factors affecting the seasonal variation of metal element concentration in the atmosphere were the scouring effect of rainwater and the monsoon during the season over the wet season. The particle size distribution of Fe in the atmosphere presents a bimodal distribution. Al is mainly distributed in the particle size of less than 2.1μm, Na is mainly distributed in the particle size of 3.6μm or less, while Cu, Pb and Cd are mainly distributed in the region of less than or equal to 0 .52μm small particles.
