Harm to human health from the consumption of shellfish and other marine products contaminated with sewage or poisonous algae is a significant health problem in the Mediterranean countries, particularly the coastal zone. From December 10 to December 14, 1991, WHO and the United Nations Environment Program jointly convened the relevant council in Athens. The meeting made the following suggestions: Regarding shellfish virus contamination, the following work is recommended: (1) Surveys were conducted in the Mediterranean wind farm to provide more adequate data on shellfish virus contamination. (2) The urgent need to establish a rapid, simple and economical test method for the detection of viruses in shellfish. (3) The following tasks should be addressed in the long-term planning for pollution monitoring and research in the Mediterranean by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Environment Program
