羌族自称“日玛”、“日表”或“如玛”、“尔玛”。“羌”属他称,从羊、从人,意为“西戎牧羊人”。四川绵阳市北川县是我国唯一的羌族自治县,现有羌族9万多人,主要聚居在交通不便的高山之间的河谷地带。五龙寨是北川30多个原始羌寨中的一个,至今保留着“刀耕火种、合伙耕地”的生产方式,保持着中国最古老最原始的羌族风俗。
