Rare earth element-modified ferroelectric crystals having the formula (Sr_ (1-x) Ba_x) _ (1-3y / 2) R_yNb_2O_6 have been prepared and studied, where R = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Lu. When R = La, Nd, x (?) 0.5 and y = 0.02, the thermoelectric coefficient of the modified material is twice that of the unmodified Sr 1-x Ba x Nb 2 O 6 (x = 0.5) The constant is four times it. Due to the addition of rare earth elements, the Curie temperature is decreased and the dielectric constant is increased. However, the loss factor and detector signal-to-noise ratio are almost unchanged. The sensitivity calculated from the measurement performance corresponds to the actual probe measurement. These properties suggest that modified SBN is a good material for small size or multiple pyroelectric infrared detectors.
