A pair of Montgomery Tunnels in Virginia, United States on a rail link between Roanoke and Bristol receives nearly 55 million tonnes of mixed cargo each year through tunnels. The Montgomery Tunnel is a pair of monorail tunnels, one eastbound and one westbound. The tunnels are each 663 feet long. After the tunnel is protected by shotcrete, the net span is about 15 feet and the net height (above the railroad track) is about 21 feet. At the western entrance to the tunnel, the two tunnels are about 46 feet apart (two railroad centerlines). 73 ft. East of the entrance. The thickest overburden at the tunnel is about 80 feet.
