二○○五年春节以后,我心中就一直惦念启老。消息不断传来,听说病情严重,昏迷不醒。也许是一种感应,那些天来,我时常心情不安,自炳森兄驾鹤西归后非常害怕再听到不好的消息。但噩耗还是来了。六月三十日上午八时许,我正在厦门参加全国第四届正书大展活动,得知启老去世了!虽然预料中感觉先生病情回转的可能性极小,但事实的来临,还是让人难以承受。一代大师离去,不仅仅是教育界、文博界、艺术界不可挽回的重大损失,更是书法界、出版界无法挽回的巨大损失!
