第25届奥运会将于1996年在美国亚特兰大市举行,亚特兰大逐渐成为世界瞩目的热点城市。1992年8月,我曾赴亚特兰大公差甘余日,亚特兰大给我留下了深刻的印象。亚特兰大(ATLANTA)是美国佐治亚(GEORGIA)州的首府。位于美东南部、查特胡奇河南面的兰岭山麓。东临大西洋,属亚热带。气候条件类似我国南京一带。人口近50万人,其中黑人占一半以上。1845年建市,为美国东南部金融、商业的中心,也是重要的销售业、制造业、教育和医疗的中心。作为一座“新兴的城市”,亚特兰大在美被誉为“新南方的象征”。该城能在争办奥运权中击败雅典,确有其独特优势。如交通便利,铁路、公路四通八达。位于闹市西南13公里处的哈茨菲尔德国际机场据称是世界第三大机场。我们从华盛顿飞抵该机场时,只见天上不同高度上多架飞机正在升降,跑道上一架架飞机排队鱼贯滑行,等待起飞,细数竟有13架之多,一会儿功夫都已升到天空。机场之大令人惊讶。停机坪220万平方英尺,居世界第一。载客量年达4700万人次,为世界第二。机场虽大,但场内有地铁,进出仍十分方便。出机场后有高速公路。全封闭的14个车道上,往来汽车按各自速度各行其道。一排排汽车流水般无声地飞驰,很少堵车。
