……要鉴赏文艺,必须驱遣我们的想象。这意思就是:文艺作品往往不是倾筐倒箧地说的,说出来的只是一部分罢了,还有一部分所谓言外之意,弦外之音,没有说出来,必须驱(?)我们的想象,才能够领会它。如果拘于有迹象的文字,而抛荒了言外之意、弦外之音,至多只能够鉴赏一半,有时连一半也鉴赏不到,因为那没有说出来的一部分反而是极关重要的一部分。这一回不说“言外”而说“言内”。这就是语言文字本身所有的意义和情味。
