The Tasmanian government in Australia negotiated an agreement with the Savage River Iron Ore Authority on the west coast of the island to allow the mine to extend its five-year exploration period. The extension of the extraction period is conditional on the mine acquiring 100% of the equity interest in the joint venturers from Australia, the United States and Japan. As a result of improved market conditions, new mining plans to reduce output, various agreements with the Tasmanian government and other factors have resulted in the mine making a 100% stake. The mine employs about 300 people and was originally planned to be closed in September 1990. However, the newly signed agreement extended its production to the end of 1995. In the next few years. Production capacity will be reduced from 2.5 million t to 1.3 million t.
