In October 1958, Comrade Yang Yong, commander of the Chinese People’s Volunteers Army, returned the last batch of volunteers to the motherland. Soon, Yong was personally appointed Chairman of the Central Military Commission Mao Zedong as the PLA’s deputy chief of general staff and commander of the Beijing Military Region, party secretary. After the start of the Cultural Revolution, Yang Yong was framed and brutally persecuted by the Lin Biao and Chiang Ch’ing rebel groups and was held in custody for nearly five years. As a result, he broke his right leg and left his handicapped, physically and mentally severely crippled. May 1971, Yang Yong was free. In mid-July 1972, the Central Committee sent Yang Yong as deputy commander of the Shenyang Military Region. I heard Yang Yong comeback, many comrades have come to say goodbye to Yang Yong. Some people are ambivalent about Yang Yong’s transfer to a foreign military region for deputy positions. They said to Yang Yong: “You have been a whole generation of Lin Biao for so many years now that you have no problems at all. Why are you going to demote civilians?”
