Trypanosomes have been found to have stable hybrids formed by genetic exchange in the motile matrix, but no evidence of genetic exchange has been found in Leishmania. The authors isolated two new insect strains from giant-tail desert rats and wild dogs in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Their karyotypes indicate that they possess the characteristics of the large Leishmania and Leishmania leishmanii in the area. To demonstrate that the two new strains are hybrids of two large Leishmania and Leishmanii Arabidopsis strains. Each Leishmania promastigote was cloned by hanging drop and capillary culture.
