Monte Carlo simulation was used to study the relationship between the fatigue life of short prestressing steel strand specimens and diagonal stay cables. The life of the cable was calculated using the statistical data determined by the fatigue test results of prestressed strand specimens. Simulated stay cables take into account the effect of cable length and cable length on fatigue life. Three kinds of probability distributions are used to describe the distribution characteristics of fatigue life of steel strand specimens. The lifetimes of diagonal cables calculated for each distribution were compared and it was found that the estimated life of diagonal cables is sensitive to the distribution used. All three distributions yielded similar conclusions as far as the relationship between the long cable room, the number of strands and the fatigue life of the cable and the properties of the short test pieces were concerned.
