早年读中学时,见英语课本后面附有一组咏牛津塔的汉译英诗,译者是吴宓。我对能把文字语句参差不齐的英诗译成形式齐整的典雅汉文五言古诗的译者,感到由衷钦佩,留下深刻印象。后来考入大学,一次从教务处公布栏前经过,偶然发现外语系任课教师名单中有吴先生的名字,不禁大喜,决定去拜望这位心仪已久的著名教授。 当我第一次带着自己幼稚的旧诗习作向先生请教时,他那旧式长袍短褂的衣著竟然出我意外,除了缺少长髯飘拂,简直活像家乡教国文的老夫子模样,丝毫没有我想象中外语系西装
