《大小凉山开发概论》是时任四川省雷马屏峨垦务局局长的任映沧,为响应国民政府开发西南大后方的号召,前往大小凉山地区实地社会调查后撰写的调查报告和研究成果。该书对民国及以前的大小凉山地区的气候、地形、交通、地质条件、资源分布、土地开垦情况、生产水平以及凉山彝族历史变迁、社会关系、生活习性与社会经济制度等各方面作了较为详细的考察和记录,对凉山地区的经济开发、资源利用、难民安置、社会矛盾的解决以及奴隶解放等一系列问题提出了自己的见解,是目前研究大小凉山地区地理、社会、历史、民族风貌的重要参考资料。当然,由于时代的原因,该书也存在诸多缺陷和不足。
