“机制”是从“机器”与“制动”这两个科技术语中各取一字构成的,原意是指机器构造及其制动原理和运行规则.后来生物学与医学运用类比法,借“机制”喻指生物机体尤其是人体的结构和功能.旨在探究它们内在运行,调节的方式和规律.1948年前后,现代控制论的创始人维纳同数学家、生物学家、医生以及工程技术人员密切合作,开创了综合研究动物(包括人类)和机器内部控制与通讯的一般规律的“控制论”.尔后半个世纪中,社会控制论与经济控制论象仿生学和人工智能一样,伴随横断科学蓬勃兴起,给社会科学带来了新的活力与生机.“机制”一词这才跨越历史鸿沟.在社会科学文献和日常用语中被频繁应用.
