Some concentrators in South Africa use flotation to recover PGMs from the ores of the Merensky vein in the Bushveld complex. In the ore contains about 1% sulfide minerals, such as chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. PGMs are closely associated with these sulfide minerals. Different concentrators use different pot systems (collectors, inhibitors, activators and foaming agents) in flotation to recover valuable minerals from the ore. A typical flotation test was carried out on two ore samples collected from different parts of the veins using the typical chemical system used in the concentrator. The flotation recoveries of sulphide minerals and gangue minerals were compared. The flotation behavior of the two samples was similar when using the three-agent regime, although different flotation behavior was observed for each of the individual minerals. Discusses the characteristics of such distinctions and their causes.
