In the previous issue, we published a series of old and new photos titled Beijing Characters. The old photo was written by a German female photographer Hedda Morrison who came to Beijing in 1933 and opened her own studio. The new photo is written by the French girl Christina Lionnet and is currently living in Beijing. Hedda Morrison loves shuttlecocking the countless hutongs in the ancient capital of Beijing and captures the fascinating folk lifestyle and folk craftsmanship she uses. Today’s Beijing is changing rapidly, but certain traditions are being tenaciously preserved, such as Beijingers’ food. This issue we focus on food. A comparison of these new and old photos shows how the most ordinary and ordinary tradition of making and consuming food is alive and well after decades.
