一九六八年八月日本琦玉县行田市附近稻荷山古坟出土一柄铁剑,长七十三点五厘米,表面复盖铁锈,尚未发现铭文。一九七八年九月十一日,铁剑送至奈良市元兴寺出土文物处理中心做X射线拍照,方发现铁剑两面均有错金汉字铭文。此消息发表后,随即在日本学术界引起热烈争论。
In August 1968 an iron sword was excavated from an ancient tomb in Inari near nearby Gyoda, Saitama, Japan. It was 73.5 cm long and covered with rust. No inscription was found yet. On September 11, 1978, the iron sword was sent to Xuanxing Cultural Relics Processing Center of Yuanxing Temple in Nara City for X-ray photography. The inscription on the two sides of the iron sword was found to contain wrong gold Chinese characters. Immediately after the news came out, there was a heated debate among Japanese academics.
