Introduction Gossypol - a polyphenol compound in cottonseeds that causes male rats, rabbits and golden hamsters to become sterile. Clinical trials have shown that it can be used as a male anti-fertility agent. The effect on the male reproductive process is due to reduced sperm motility and impeded the process of spermatogenesis. Changes in germ cell function are not associated with changes in sexual desire and hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis endocrine function. A recent report of gossypol treatment for certain uterine functional diseases mentions gossypol as an inhibitor of ovarian estrogen secretion. To further assess the effect of gossypol on female reproductive performance, we investigated its effects on pituitary and ovarian hormones and fertility in golden hamsters. The experimental results show that gossypol, which causes the male sterility dose, is ineffective as a female contraceptive , And it has no significant effect on the normal pituitary and ovarian hormone secretion cycle.
