The decorative life of cut flowers of Zinnia elegans was prolonged with a stock solution containing 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate (8-HQC) and sugar. In 200ppm 8-HQC and 1% sugar solution, the longest flower life. Necrotic plaque was produced on tongue flowers and leaves in solutions of 2 or 3% sugar and 200 ppm 8-HQC. The decorative life of flowers remaining in 0.25% or 0.5% sugar and 200 ppm 8-HQC solution outweighs the flowers in deionized water. But not as good as or the same as the post-harvest lifespan in 1% sugar and 8-HQC (200 ppm) solutions, depending on the breed. Flowers produced under natural sunlight in May-June were significantly longer than those produced by light-filled lamps with an incandescent bulb for 14 hours a day in February-April.
