笙,是我国流行,历史悠久、富于民族特色的吹管乐器,其名称除笙外还有和、巢。各种名称的由来史书有比较详细的记载,如笙,《释名》中是这样解释:“笙,生也,万物贯地而生,发匏为之,故曰匏竽,其中空以受簧。”如和巢,《尔雅》中介绍说“大笙谓巢,小笙谓和”其实,笙、竽在历史上也同属于一种乐器,只是区别于苗子的多少。
