乌柏是大戟科植物,江苏所产的乌柏学名为Sapium sebiferum Roxb. 根皮可供药用,其根皮制剂,近经试验可治腹水病。据唐本草记载它的根白皮本主治暴水,癥结绩聚。李时珍说乌柏根可利水通肠,功胜大戟。引起了作者的重视。取新采乌柏根皮以70℃烘干磨粉,以95%乙醇冷浸二囘,浸液减压浓缩,浓缩物经用无水乙醇、醚、石油醚及环己烷反覆精制,得熔点为81℃的无色柱状结晶一种,分子式为C_(10)H_(12)O_4,它的溶解度及对三氯化铁的颜色反应显示酚类的性质,
