读者高孟平同志对“哗然而骇者”的注释(初中语文课本第五册《捕蛇者说》)提出了质疑,希望我们谈谈看法。现答复如下。在“哗然而骇者”这句话里,有两个重要的虚词,一个是“而”,一个是“者”。“而”是连词。但在这里,它不是把“哗然”和“骇者”两个词连接起来,而是把“哗然”这个状语连接给动词“骇”(这里表示被动义)。“者”字是一个指示代词,用在分析原因、解说人、事的句子里,相当于“这”。《说文解字》上说:
